
Getting Low-E Glass Preheating Right (Even at 3+ Meters)
If you’re preheating wide-format Low-E glass, you know the struggle. You need the heat to be perfectly even across the whole conveyor. But once you hit widths over 3 meters, the standard lamps you buy off the shelf just can’t keep up. That’s why we build custom continuous infrared units. We’re basically trying to kill off those annoying cold spots and thermal gradients that haunt wide-span baking tunnels.
The Headache of Scaling Up
Here’s the thing: you can’t just stretch a quartz tube and call it a day. When you go long, voltage drop becomes a nightmare. If the wattage isn’t balanced, the ends of the lamp get scorching hot while the center stays lukewarm. That’s a recipe for inconsistent tempering, and in this business, inconsistency is a disaster. We spend a lot of time obsessing over filament density and voltage. We make sure the heat flux stays steady from the very first millimeter to the last. Just a heads-up: make sure your power supply is beefy enough. These long-run units pull a lot of current, and the last thing you want is a tripped breaker in the middle of a run.
What Goes Into the Build
We use high-purity quartz to house the tungsten filaments. But the real secret is the wavelength. For Low-E glass, the heat needs to soak into the coating without shocking the surface. Depending on what you’re after, we can tune these for short-wave or medium-wave output. We also cap the ends with industrial-grade connectors—usually R7s or heavy-duty leads—so they don’t fry after a few weeks of constant heating and cooling.
The Trade-offs (Because Nothing is Perfect)
The big win here is that these ultra-long units mean fewer seams in your heating array. Fewer lamps mean fewer gaps in the radiation. It’s a cleaner setup. But, there’s a catch. A 3-meter quartz tube is fragile. If your frame is slightly crooked or your conveyor vibrates too much, that tube can snap. It’s a heartbreak you want to avoid. We always suggest using flexible mounting clips to take the pressure off the glass. And don’t forget your cooling. The amount of radiant heat in a wide-format tunnel is intense. If your airflow isn’t dialed in, you’ll end up baking your own electronics.
