
Keeping Your Infrared Heaters Safe in Damp Spots
If you’re putting infrared lamps in places like livestock brooding areas or wash-down zones, you’ve got one major enemy: water vapor. Moisture is sneaky. It finds a way across your insulators, creating these little paths for electricity to leak. Before you know it, you’re dealing with a short circuit or a dead lamp. To stop that from happening, you have to get serious about how you seal your terminals and choose your housing. The battle against moisture We go with high-grade quartz glass for the heating elements. It’s great because it doesn’t freak out when the temperature swings and it handles chemicals without breaking down. But the glass is just the start. The real danger is where the wires connect. To actually keep the electricity where it belongs, we use silicone seals or potting compounds at the ends of the lamp. Think of it as a raincoat for your electronics. If you leave those ends open, capillary action will literally suck humidity right into the socket. That’s a fast track to a burnt-out lamp or a tripped GFCI breaker. Not fun. Wiring it right You can’t just treat these like a desk lamp and plug them into a standard socket. Not in a wet zone. We stick to IP65-rated enclosures. For the wire splices, we use heat-shrink tubing with an adhesive lining. It creates a physical wall that steam just can’t get through. We also make sure the grounding is spot on, so if anything does leak to the chassis, it goes straight to earth instead of into someone. The tricky part: Heat vs. Seals Here’s the catch. If you seal everything too tight to keep the water out, you might trap too much heat around the lamp caps. Materials expand when they get hot. If there’s no room for that movement, your seal will eventually crack. It’s a balancing act. You want it waterproof, but you have to give the materials some breathing room. My advice? Give your seals a quick check every six months. Just make sure the humidity hasn’t started eating away at your insulation. Better to spend five minutes checking now than an afternoon replacing a blown system later.
